The Sheet of Treatment
Premise
In the town of Taughn, there is a killer on the loose. There have already been two killings. The killer has no consistent MO, but writes a number on the forehead of the victims in marker. When another victim is discovered, DI Scott Skinner and DI Niels Wissen investigate the crime scene, and discover a connection between the victims.
Short Synopsis
DI Scott Skinner is having a nightmare. One of the victims of the killer loose in his town is taunting him for not saving her. Skinner awakes to a phone call from his partner telling him that another victim of the killer has been found. Skinner and his partner, Niels Wissen, go to the crime scene, where Skinner makes a link between the killings and the victims. Skinner and Wissen go off to investigate this new lead. The show begins with the killer having already killed two people from the town of Taughn. DI Scott Skinner of the local PD is haunted by the case; he knew the victims well, and the case is taking a toll on his mental state. As a result, Skinner has begun to have dreams about the victims being killed, which is where my clip begins: inside Skinner's dream. He is shown running from something, but it is not shown what. He is then transported to a new location, where he is tied to a chair and being taunted by one of the victims.
Skinner is woken up by the sound of his phone ringing; it's his partner on the case, DI Niels Wissen, calling to say that another body has been found, and that this one's different. Skinner and Wissen go to the crime scene, where they look at the body. While the previous two victims were female, this one is male, which is uncommon for serial killings. The cause of death was a lethal injection, which is different to the other killings; the killer has no consistent MO and now no consistent gender for their victims, making it a tough case. The only way to know that it's the same killer is the fact that each victim has had a number drawn on their forehead in marker.
However, based on the bottle of prescription pills found in the victim's pocket and the other victims' causes of death, Skinner makes the deduction that the killer is murdering people according to how they lived. The first victim was suicidal, and was hanged. The second victim self-harmed, and was stabbed multiple times. And now this victim, who took medication, was drugged. Skinner makes the connection that all of these people must have been to, or stayed at, Grayview Clinic, a large mental health clinic in the heart of Taughn. This link is the first lead in the case, and Skinner and Wissen go off to investigate, which is where my scene ends.
Setting
The show is set in the town of Taughn (pronounced torn), which is an odd town. At the centre of Taughn is Grayview Clinic, which is a private mental health facility that offers support, consultations, medical treatment and residential care for people with mental illnesses. It is the largest clinic of its kind in the area, and holds a lot of Taughn's economy together. It is therefore always a shadow on the town, creating an unfriendly atmosphere. After all, it would be odd to know that your town's prosperity is largely the result of people needing help with their mental state.
The crime scene where Skinner and Wissen find the male body is located in the wooded area that surrounds Taughn and isolates it from the world.
Skinner's dream takes place partly in a field (in the scene where he is running) in the evening, and partly in a large empty room (in the scene where he is tied to a chair) which is lit with extreme red lighting. This is an example of the show's unique visual style of some extreme cinematography elements, and is also a display of the show's lack of a solid reality and how the audience is sometimes placed into the world inside the head of the protagonist. This psychological element of the show serves as a main part of its genre definition, but also as the unique selling point: the audience is left not knowing which world they're in, which creates enigma and intrigue for them.
